Are you the Only ‘You’ Present in this Universe?
I am a 100% astronomy fanatic. The silhouettes of the eclipses, the meteor showers, the artistically drawn constellations. How can I not be an astronomy fanatic! The stories about our massive universe that we know of (and don’t know of yet), only increases my fascination with astronomy even more. However, amidst the scientific theories and the celestial events that we witness with our naked eyes, there exists the realm of conspiracy theories that makes the mysteries of astronomy even more fascinating, including. Some of the theories include the flat earth theory, the fake moon-landing and even the claims of alien bases on the Moon! Though the one that stands out as the most intriguing (and the most believable) one would have to be the theory of the existence of a parallel universe.
Unveiling the Cosmic Mysteries
Humanity's journey into space has been marked by several expeditions such as India’s recent successful satellite mission ‘Chandrayaan-3’ to the Moon’s south pole. We humans take esteem pride in launching such missions to further explore and comprehend the cosmos, yet, the more we learn about the universe, the more it becomes apparent that we are still unknown to a vast realm of the universe. And this is why such conspiracy theories such as the existence of a parallel universe have the power to stimulate thoughts to find out if the said things were true.
The concept of parallel universes, also known as the multiverse theory, suggests that there are other universes existing alongside our own. The theory posits that these different universes or multiverses may have different physical laws, constants, and conditions. This makes it even more interesting as it suggests that there is a possibility that you are living a completely different life on the other side of the universe! Just the thought of being able to walk on alternate paths in life is fascinating in itself. Imagine if you would have been born into a different family, having lesser struggle in this alternate life, taking the career path you wish you could have chosen, marrying the love of your life, and whatnot! A rather creative take on life, isn’t it!
However, as creative as it may sound, does this theory truly withstand the rigors of scientific scrutiny?
Theories that Hint Towards the Existence of Multiverse
Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics
This interpretation proposed by Hugh Everette III in 1957, suggests that every quantum event results in a branching of the universe. In other words, every possible outcome of a quantum event occurs in a separate universe. Scientific explanation? In quantum physics, particles like electrons do not have definite properties until they are measured. Instead, they exist in a superposition of multiple states, each with a probability associated with it. When a measurement is made, the particle chooses one of the states at random. The interpretation also suggests that all possible outcomes of a quantum event actually happen, but in different branches of the universe. For example, if you flip a quantum coin, in one universe, it lands heads up, and in another, it lands tails up.
Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation Anomalies
Picture the universe as a vast cosmic canvas, painted with the afterglow of the Big Bang itself. The cosmic microwave background radiation, commonly known as (CMB), is the afterglow of the Big Bang and is remarkably uniform across the sky. However, when scientists scrutinize the CMB data in detail, they have discovered some anomalies or irregularities. Some theories suggest that these anomalies could be explained by the presence of other universes exerting gravitational influences on our universe. In a multiverse scenario, regions with different properties could cause these observed variations. One hypothesis proposes that neighboring universes, with different fundamental characteristics, could influence our own through the force of gravity. Like cosmic neighbors in a grand cosmic neighborhood, these adjacent universes might exert their gravitational pull, causing subtle perturbations in the CMB radiation of our universe.
String Theory and the Landscape
String theory, discovered by an accident in 1969 by Italian physicist Gabriele Venezianoan, is an audacious framework that transcends the confines of conventional dimensions, and proposes a breathtaking vision. Beyond our familiar three dimensions of space and one of time, there exists a vast and mysterious landscape—a tapestry woven from the fabric of multiple universes, each with its own cosmic composition. String theory serenades us with the harmonious possibility that we inhabit but one note in a symphony of multiversal melodies. In this cosmic landscape, there are many different universes, each with its own set of rules and properties, like different songs in a vast cosmic symphony. These universes are all connected by tiny strings, the building blocks of everything in our universe. What makes string theory so captivating is the idea that our universe is just one of these cosmic songs. It's like we're listening to a small part of the music, and there are countless other melodies playing in the background.
Fine-Tuning of Fundamental Constants
In 1961, physicist Robert H. Dicke proposed the theory of Fine-tuning of fundamental constants. The theory suggests considering the universe as a finely tuned machine, like a perfectly crafted musical instrument. It turns out that certain numbers, like the gravitational constant or the cosmological constant, need to have very specific values for our universe to work as it does. These values are so precise that if they were even slightly different, life as we know it might not exist. Now, here's where it gets interesting. Imagine there are many other universes out there, each with its own set of rules and values for these constants. In some of these universes, these constants might be different from ours. So, if we live in a multiverse—a grand collection of universes—then it's not surprising that our universe happens to have the exact right values for life to thrive. It's like a cosmic lottery where we happen to be in the universe that's just right for us.
Inflation Theory and Bubble Universes
Proposed by physicist Alan Guth in the 1980s, cosmic inflation theory suggests that the universe underwent a rapid expansion in its early moments. This theory could lead to the creation of "bubble universes," each with its own set of physical laws and constants, separated by cosmic inflationary boundaries. These bubble spaces are like their own mini-universes, with invisible walls separating them from each other. It's as if our universe is just one of these cosmic bubbles, and there are many others out there. So, according to cosmic inflation theory, there could be a whole collection of universes, each with its own recipe for reality. It's a bit like having a cosmic bakery with an endless variety of cosmic pastries, each with its own flavor.
